Clarification on CustomerContract in the JOBS API

Can you please clarify for me the CustomerContract response in the Jobs API? When I use a GET to retrieve details for a specific job, the CustomerContract.ID and CustomerContract.Name both contain data - even for jobs that are NOT on a contract. The .Name is always the same as the Customer.Name. I have no idea what the .ID is. It is different than the Customer.ID, but it is not a valid contract ID.
If I look at a job that IS on a contract, the CustomerContract details are as to be expected. I.e. the .ID refers to a valid Contract.ID and the other details are correct.
It is very confusing, unless I'm just overlooking something. I would expect the CustomerContract. details to be empty if the job isn't on a contract. I'm not sure if it's related to this recent forum post: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2868&p=7732&hilit=contract#p7732 Although it appears to be on every job, and I know we don't have that many deleted contracts (if any). In addition, the CustomerContract.ID is often (but not always) within one digit of the Customer.ID.
